René Magritte (1898-1967) was a Belgian Surrealist artist who has become well known for his witty and thought-provoking images.
With no intention of making logically comprehensible works, Surrealists created fantastical visual imagery plumbed from the subconscious mind. Many of the great artists of the 20th century were Surrealists, including Salvador Dali, Man Ray, Jean Arp, Max Ernst and Giorgio de Chirico.
The mind loves the unknown. It loves images whose meaning is unknown, since the meaning of the mind itself is unknown. René Magritte
